75 years on, we must pay the most fitting tribute

PSA President Paul Griffiths has released on the 75th anniversary of VE Day:

Today marks 75 years since VE Day – the end of the Second World War in Europe.  A time for us to remember the people that gave their lives to secure our future. Our predecessors were fighting for our freedom against a visible enemy that they fought at war.  By air, sea or land, many paid the ultimate sacrifice and we will always be indebted to them.

It was a war for the whole nation, not only for the military but for all those who played a key role and, of course, the loved ones left behind – saying goodbye to someone knowing they may never see them again.

This is a day of celebration, remembrance and reflection.

Whilst we may not be able to celebrate in the usual way, this is a poignant time for us to reflect on the sacrifices we are being asked to make as a nation today, to protect those who came before us and for our generations to come. We are all being asked to make sacrifices of a different kind, to protect us against an invisible enemy posing a completely different threat.

However, I see today the spirit of a nation that is determined to battle through and show the same values of the generation that we respect and that gave us so much.

As we remember what that generation did for us, let the future generation judge us by our actions today. Let’s all remain in solidarity over what we need to do and maintain our spirit and resolve to get through this crisis in the same way our predecessors faced their challenges.

We will remember them.
